Registration and Enrollment

There are a lot of steps and a lot of information in this post. Please read carefully. If you need to, read a couple of sections and then take a break before reading more.

How do I know what classes to take?

All new students must take the Comprehensive Applied Language Institute Online Placement Exam (CALIOPE) before registering for classes. This exam will tell us, and you, what level of English classes you need to be in.

If you do not take the exam, you cannot enroll in classes because we will not know what classes to enroll in.

How do I take CALIOPE?

CALIOPE costs $30-$50. The exact cost depends on when you take the exam. Students who take the exam early can use a Promo Code to save money.

The current promo code is EARLYBIRD. This code is active July 13 – August 12, 2022.

Once you pay for the exam, the ALI will get a notification of your payment. Then, the ALI will register you to take the exam and email you your exam registration information. You will use that information to log into the testing website and take the exam.

When do I take CALIOPE?

Students need to take CALIOPE before classes start.

If you wait until the day classes start, you will miss about about 3 days of classes. If you start classes late, you will miss important information and material.

We recommend you take the exam at least 10 days before the start of classes.

The exam results are valid for 60 days, so you can take it before you leave your home country if you want. this will give you an idea of how long you will study English before you begin academic classes. Knowing your level and how much English you will need can help you make important decisions.

How do I get my exam results?

After you complete CALIOPE, our instructors will grade your exam and determine your level. This can take 1-3 days. Once we know your level, we will email you to share your results and arrange an appointment to register for classes.

When do I register for classes?

Registration is a three-step process:

  1. You sign your ALI registration form
  2. The Academic Advisor submits your ALI registration form to the UMKC Registrar
  3. The UMKC Registrar enters your courses into Pathway.

Once you have your exam results and remove all holds from your account, you can sign your ALI registration form. You can do this in person or electronically.

*Signing the form does not mean that you are officially registered. After you sign your ALI registration form, the Academic Advisor will send it to the UMKC Registrar. The UMKC Registrar will enter your courses into Pathway, then you will be officially registered. This can take up to 2 days after you sign your form. Once you are officially registered, your courses will appear on Pathway and Canvas.

What are holds?

“Holds” are notes placed on your UMKC account that tell you things you need to do. Some of these holds will prevent you from registering for classes. You can see your holds by logging into your Pathway account.

New Student Holds:

  1. E Consent No Answer – E Consent will allow the university to post your grades, schedule, personal information, and bill online (Pathway). When you first log into Pathway, you should be prompted to complete E Consent.
  2. ISAO Check-in – this is the Immigration Check-in session that all new international students are required to attend. Once you receive your visa, you can sign up for a check-in session on your application portal.
  3. ALI English Evaluation – this is CALIOPE. Once you complete the exam, the ALI will remove the hold.
  4. ISAO Orientation – New Student Orientation is held the Thursday before classes begin (fall and spring). ISAO will send you emails about Orientation and how to sign up. If you missed those emails, contact ISAO. After the Orientation, ISAO will remove the hold.

You must remove all of these holds before you can sign your ALI registration form. The Academic Advisor will monitor your account to make sure the holds are removed before asking you to sign the form. If you have any questions about your holds, please ask.

Registration and Enrollment: Review

Registration is not a quick process. It can take many days. You should start the process before you leave home.

Before you are officially registered, you must

  1. Set up your UMKC online accounts – Pathway, Canvas, and UMKC Email
  2. Pay for and take CALIOPE
  3. Receive your exam results
  4. Remove your holds – sign up for Orientation and Check-in
  5. Make a registration appointment
  6. Sign your ALI registration form

If you have any trouble completing these things, please contact the ALI at ali@umkc.edu. We want to help you.

It is important to plan ahead. UMKC charges a $250 late registration fee to students who register after the first day of classes. If you do not plan ahead, you will start classes late and be charged the fee.
